The invention of photography was a world-changing scientific breakthrough, but it was also a momentous time for art, and Frenchman Camille Silvy (1834–1910) made his mark in both of these fields with his thoughtfully composed images and his experiments with the mass production of photographs. Examining the career of this somewhat forgotten pioneer, this monograph features 100 duotone reproductions that showcase Silvy's rather modern approach to portraiture, as he captures royals and actors, governesses and urchins with equal aplomb.
