In 1961, while working on a Madeline book that included a fez-topped magician, Ludwig Bemelmans wrote to his friend Jacqueline Kennedy with an idea about Madeline visiting the White House. Sadly, he did not live long enough to begin work on Madeline and Caroline, but in this delightful tale for all ages from his grandson John Bemelmans Marciano, we very nearly have that lost book. Full of the classic Madeline joie de vive, it is the story of a lonely little girl in the White House who is delighted when Miss Clavel and 12 little girls come for an Easter visit, accompanied by a tricky white rabbit in a fez.
