Fortis Cohn is an ambitious and sexually conflicted young lawyer who has fallen under the spell of the insidiously charismatic Bronk Vreeland, commander of a Northern California "Patriot" group that is armed and hellbound for Apocalypse. Vreeland's militia has garrisoned Native American sacred ground on the slopes of volcanic Mount Shasta and employed Fortis as their consigliere. In the second of the Stephan Raszer investigations (after Enoch's Portal), it is up to Raszer to infiltrate this nest of vipers and extricate Fortis before his soul becomes the Devil's collateral.
