Born in Denmark, the son of a shoemaker, Hans Christian Andersen endured a wretched childhood and an awkward youth largely through his ability to re-imagine the world in his own way, and though he wrote novels, plays, and poems, it is of course for his magical fairy tales that he remains known and loved. This treasury collects all 168 of Andersen's tales, including such classics as "The Red Shoes," "The Mermaid," "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Tinder Box," and of course "The Ugly Duckling." Originally published in 1835-72, they are presented here with W.A. and J.K. Craigie's 1914 revisions to H.P. Paull's 1872 translation, and illustrated with black and white drawings by various artists.
