When young lawyer Tod Jackson (Randolph Scott) arrives in pioneer-era Kansas, he learns that his rancher friends, Grat and Bob Dalton (Brian Donlevy and Broderick Crawford), are in danger of losing their land in a crooked development deal. Jackson tries to help them, but when a fake murder charge turns the Daltons into outlaws, he is trapped between duty to his friends and obligation to the law. This sagebrush saga from 1940 also stars George Bancroft, Andy Devine, and Kay Francis as Bob Dalton's former fiancée and Jackson's newfound sweetheart.
