Working as a nurse at a war-torn German hospital, Anna Zeller joins forces with a Red Cross doctor to train dogs as companions for sightless veterans. Blinded by chlorine gas, Max Benesch has lost his fiancée, and his hopes of being a composer—yet despite his military service, he is still confronted with anti-Semitism. As Anna endeavors to help him and discovers more about the conflict's escalating brutality, she realizes how impossible it will be for any of them to escape the war unscathed.
