He was recruited by the Rolling Stones in 1963, a few months after they formed, since the band kept running into him in London rhythm and blues clubs. For the next six decades, Charlie Watts was there alongside Mick Jagger and Keith Richards for every gig, tour, and album, right up until his death in 2021. Thoughtful, intellectual, happy to remain in the background, Watts nonetheless was at the heart of the Stones and a vital part of their chemistry; "We laughed all the time," said Jagger.
