Description
(A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 2016) In 2009, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bruce Springsteen performed at the halftime show of Super Bowl XLIII with the E Street Band, an experience so exhilarating that Springsteen decided to write about it, and in the process began this autobiography. With the same honesty, humor, and lyricism found in his songs, he describes growing up Catholic in gritty Freehold, New Jersey, and how he was electrified by Elvis Presley's debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. He vividly recounts his early days as a bar-band king in Asbury Park, as well as the personal struggles that inspired his best work—the song "Born to Run," for example, reveals more about his life than we might have guessed. As he says in his foreword: "I come from a boardwalk town where almost everything is tinged with a bit of fraud. So am I. By 20, no race-car-driving rebel, I was a guitar player on the streets of Asbury Park and already a member in good standing amongst those who 'lie' in service of the truth ... artists, with a small 'a.' But I held four clean aces. I had youth, almost a decade of hard-core bar band experience, a good group of homegrown musicians who were attuned to my performance style and a story to tell."
