Our notions of 20th-century American art have been significantly shaped by a Russian Jewish immigrant named Edith Halpert, whose Downtown Gallery in New York was a forum for unknown and underrepresented artists. Paying tribute to a remarkable woman, this exhibition catalogue also surveys those who benefitted from her sponsorship, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, Jacob Lawrence, Ben Shahn, Stuart Davis, Elie Nadelman, and Charles Sheeler.
