A farmer's daughter from Galloway, Jane Haining became a matron at the Scottish Jewish Mission School in Budapest in 1932. Haining was on holiday when war broke out, but she immediately went back to Hungary to remain with her pupils, come what may. Arrested by the Gestapo in April 1944 for offenses that included working with Jews and listening to the BBC, Haining was sent to Auschwitz.
