Born into slavery in Kentucky, William Wells Brown (1814-84) would later become a pioneering Black novelist and an influential abolitionist. The pivotal event in his life, however, was his escape from slavery, and in this poignant and suspenseful memoir, he sheds light on the horrors of this system and his own desperate journey in search of freedom.
