In December 1941, General Douglas MacArthur, caught off guard by the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, was forced to retreat to Corregidor. He had claimed, "I shall return," and four years later he did. To take back Corregidor, MacArthur called on the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment to jump onto the island and wrest it from some 6700 Japanese defenders who were ready to fight to the death. Drawn from firsthand accounts and interviews with the battle's surviving veterans, Kevin Maurer tells the story of these men who helped MacArthur honor his promise.
