A Ukrainian-American living in upper Manhattan, Natasha is struggling to balance her roles as a new mother, a wife, and an actress. When Natasha asks her grandmother, Larissa to tell the story of her family's Soviet wartime escape from the Nazis in Kiev, she is regaled with a tale of a riveting tale of life in the Ural Mountains, where Larissa was torn in her affections for two brothers from a wealthy family.
