The Vietnam War

It's been more than 40 years since the last American personnel were helicoptered out of Saigon, yet the fallout from the Vietnam War continues to be felt in our political, social, and cultural landscape. A stunning new PBS documentary series from Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and Geoffrey Ward, The Vietnam War explores the many perspectives of those involved through scores of interviews in America and Vietnam, while plunging us into the chaos and intensity of combat. Along with offering the series on DVD—and the vividly detailed companion volume, signed by Ward—we've assembled a collection of classic memoirs, novels, and histories of the Vietnam War, as well as dramatic films and eye-opening new views on what got us into the conflict and kept us there for decades.

Following the 1973 ceasefire agreement in Paris, the pullout of U.S. troops was completed in March. But the struggle did not go well for South Vietnam, and President Duong Van Minh surrendered in 1975. The Vietnam War follows the final retreat of American and South Vietnamese officials, helicoptered out of Saigon as the North Vietnamese took the southern capital. The epic documentary concludes with the commemoration of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the voices of those summing up the war in our collective consciousness.
