When Nazi occupiers arrived in Greece in 1941, almost 50,000 Jews from the city of Salonica (Thessaloniki) were sent to concentration camps, and few returned. A Jewish doctor named Isaac Matarasso and his son escaped imprisonment and joined the resistance.
