In 1963, Andy Warhol was a fashion illustrator for leather maker Fleming-Joffe, Ltd. in New York City. He created The Autobiography of a Snake as an award ceremony presentation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's the story of a snake who transforms himself into accessories for a constellation of 1960s celebrities—Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, and Diana Vreeland among them. As "Noa the Boa" navigates the world of the rich and famous, it's easy to see him as a stand-in for his creator. Though the anticipated film was never produced, Warhol's original color sketches for the project are presented here as a jaunty picture book, full of the creative brilliance he was about to unleash on the pop art world, with commentary from his then-employers Arthur and Teddy Edelman.
