At the turn of the 20th century, Edward Sheriff Curtis began a three decade odyssey through 80 Native American tribal lands, from the Inuit of Alaska to the Hopi of the Southwest. He was perhaps the first modern ethnologist, sacrificing his finances, his marriage, and his health to document their rapidly disappearing culture in thousands of photographs and audio recordings, with detailed accounts of tribal life. This compact, chunky album reproduces all of the more than 2,000 photos from his 20-volume opus The North American Indian, including images of daily activity as well as striking portraits of such figures as Chief Bull, Sitting Bear, American Horse, and Princess Angeline.
