Though celebrated for his dreamlike paintings of amorous aristocrats and melancholy actors, Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) also produced a number of captivating works with military subjects. Rather than producing images of battle, Watteau focuses on the quiet moments between the fighting, when soldiers could rest and daydream, smoke pipes and play cards. Depicting all of Watteau's paintings, drawings, and prints on the subject, this exhibition catalogue puts these unfamiliar works in the context of his brief but momentous career.
