Trumpeter Rick Martin could pick up a tune so quick, it didn't matter to the Cotton Club boss that he was underage, nor did the guys in the band care he was a white kid from the slums of L.A. But while Rick easily conquers the nightclubs of New York, he may not have what it takes to live a musician's life. Inspired by horn player Bix Beiderbecke, Dorothy Baker's 1938 novel itself inspired the 1950 film with Kirk Douglas and Lauren Bacall.
