If any periodical is synonymous with dazzling color, it is National Geographic. In this anthology of world class photographs, each chapter is devoted to a color, with an essay that explores its qualities, meaning, and symbolism. As expected, here are images of animals in various tints—a jellyfish, a cougar, an owl—as well as humans in all their wonderful shades. Among the standouts here are a capering monkey silhouetted against the sun, a Milanese fortress tinted violet in the dusk, a golden idol at the far end of a spectacular temple, a terraced Chinese rice field seemingly containing all the colors of the rainbow, and a yellow Plymouth in Hawaii is parked in front of the owner's matching house.
