For those more familiar with the lighthouses of North America, the remarkable structures in this appropriately tall album will be something of a revelation, with their individual designs dictated by widely varying architectural traditions as well as by their practical purpose and the prevailing conditions. German customs officer Thomas Ebelt is also a freelance photographer with a lifelong passion for lighthouses. He traveled all around Europe in pursuit of the dramatic portraits of 77 beacons collected here, from the Kiel-Holtenau light (one of the most beautiful in Germany, at which weddings are often held) to Malta's redoubtable little St. Elmo's Breakwater beacon, captured in golden sunlight.
