Known in Korea as Mount Geumgang, the Diamond Mountains are perhaps the most famous and emotionally resonant site on the Korean Peninsula, a breathtaking range of rocky peaks, waterfalls, lagoons, and manmade pavilions. The partitioning of Korea in the 1940s situated them in the North, making these mountains inaccessible to visitors, while shrouding the site in legend. Jeong Seon (1676-1759) revolutionized Korean painting with his Diamond Mountains landscapes, replacing generic imagery with accurate, detailed, yet undeniably beautiful likenesses of this treasured landscape. The dozens of color illustrations here include samples of his splendid paintings as well as exquisite album leaves, handscrolls, and screens.
