When Clarence Smoyer is assigned to the gunner's seat of his Sherman tank, his crewmates discover that the gentle giant from Pennsylvania has a hidden talent: He's a natural-born shooter. Although Smoyer and his crews thought they were invincible, they discover that German Panzers can shoot right through their armor. During the 1945 battle in Cologne, Smoyer is in a state-of-the-at Pershing tank, leading the attack. During a tank duel with a German teenager, a tragic error occurs that will haunt Smoyer for life, and as he memorably recounts here, it led him in the present day back to Cologne to do the unthinkable: to face his enemy, one last time.
