The turn of the 20th century was a golden age for tales of terror, with British writers taking the lead. Much as we may recall Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927) for humorous novels like Three Men in a Boat, he is a sure hand at horror in such stories as "The Haunted Mill" and "Silhouettes." His friends Barry Pain (1864-1928) and Robert Barr (1849-1912) are also represented in the 25 selections here, while the rare novelette The Mystery of Black Rock Creek combines the talents of Jerome, Pain, E.F. Benson, Eden Phillpotts, and Frank Frankfort Moore.
