Everyone has a story. In January 2020, for its 50th anniversary, PBS television launched American Portrait, an ambitious national storytelling project that invited participants to take part in a multiplatform conversation about what it means to be an American today. All they had to do was respond to simples cues like: "My American story started when ____" "You don't know what it's like to ____" "I was raised to believe ____" "What keeps me up at night is ____." Little did we know how momentous 2020 would become, and this companion volume to the series offers a complex portrait of who we are as a people, told in a communal voice through more than 400 stories and photos.
