Operation Agreement started as a fairly simple plan to destroy German General Erwin Rommel's bomb-proof oil-storage tanks at Tobruk, while robbing him of an important port. This 1942 endeavor was expanded, however, and soon included the RAF, the Royal Navy, the Marines and two of the largest destroyers in the Mediterranean. Drawing on interviews with participants, Gordon Landsborough's 1956 account chronicles how local gossip and information leaks undermined British planning, resulting in a crushing Axis victory.
