While reading classic children's books like Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and The Little House, many of us have been curious to know more about author-illustrator Virginia Lee Burton (1909-68). Trained in the fine arts, "Ginny" found her calling when she started creating stories for her sons, drawing machines with friendly names like Mary Anne, Maybelle, and Katy. In this loving tribute to Burton for readers 4 to 8, John Rocco does a marvelous job of emulating her style, adapting it to also depict this beloved artist coming of age in Massachusetts, studying dance and learning to sketch.
