Cake, it turns out, has cheered artist and author Maira Kalman throughout her life, ever since the very first one she remembers, a chocolate cake shared on the terrace of her aunt Shoshana's apartment in Tel Aviv. This beautiful little book, filled with Kalman's joyous paintings, is an impressionistic memoir of particular cakes and also cakes in general; as she says, "It is not an auspicious occasion without cake. Things are much nicer with cake." The book is also full of cake recipes from Barbara Scott-Goodman, including Pistachio and Almond Pound Cake, Pavlova with Fresh Berries, Flourless Chocolate Cake, Honey Cake, Plum Torte, Gingerbread Cake, and Mit Schlag.
