Art songs form an important part of the varied oeuvre of Spain's Joaquín Turina (1882–1944). Turina wrote compositions for this genre (one closely allied to his romantic nature) consistently throughout his life, and their importance is demonstrated by the immediate, international recognition they received in his lifetime. Like Turina, tenor Manuel Cid was born in Seville. A native of the Basque region of Spain, Ricardo Requejo won critical acclaim for his recording of the complete works for piano by Manuel de Falla. The two musicians are the ideal interpreters for these songs, which include the cycle Poema en Forma de Canciones, op. 19; Tres Arias, op. 26; several selections from Canto a Sevilla, op. 37; Tres Sonetos, op. 54; Tríptico, op. 45; Homenaje a Lope de Vega, op.'0; Tres Poemas, op. 81; and Saeta en forma de Salve a la Virgen de la Esperanza, op. 60.
