Decades before "Weird Al" Yankovic came on the scene, Stan Freberg set the standard for musical parody with his sly lampoons of pop culture, often infusing his routines with off-kilter musical accompaniment. Capturing the entertainer at the peak of his career, here on two discs are Freberg's number one hit "St. George and the Dragonet," as well as the musical spoofs "Banana Boat (Day-O)," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "Heartbreak Hotel," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," and both parts of "Wun'erful, Wun'erful," a surreal send-up of Lawrence Welk. The 45 selections also include broader, topical satires, among them "Green Chri$tma$," "Tele-Vee-Shun," and—taking aim at the politics of the McCarthy era—"Little Blue Riding Hood" and "Point of Order."
